CONCERT BANDS
Concert Band
The Concert Band is designed to extend a student’s knowledge and skill and will focus on developing fundamentals such as characteristic tone, technical facility, rhythm, and basic musicianship. All Freshmen Band members participate in Concert Band.
Symphonic Band
The Symphonic Band is centered on frequent concerts, performances, and occasional after- school rehearsals that allow students to gain confidence and experience in their own playing through performance. Placement in this ensemble is by first advancing from Freshman Concert Band. Advanced performance standards are necessary.
Wind Ensemble
The Wind Ensemble is the most advanced group, centered on frequent concerts, performances, and after school rehearsals that allow students to gain confidence in their playing through performance. Placement in this ensemble is by appointment or audition only. Advanced performance standards are necessary.
Music Performance Adjudication
(MPA)
Our Concert Band Ensembles work very hard throughout the school year to prepare for this festival, which is sanctioned by the North Carolina Bandmasters Association. The purpose of the festival is to:

Provide a performance opportunity for students and directors that offers a critical assessment of the quality of their performances by highly qualified experts in band performance.

Encourage participation in the only state-sanctioned event that provides a summative, standards-based assessment, designed to measure student performance as related to the goals, objectives, and grade-level competencies specified in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.

Provide the opportunity for students and directors to perform for and learn from their peers in a formal concert venue.

Provide a model that connects quality preparation with quality performance and supports the continued musical growth of students and directors.
The ensembles are rated on their performance of three prepared musical selections as well as one sight-reading piece. For this event, our Concert and Symphonic Bands join together to perform as one group and our Wind Ensemble performs separately. The ratings are as follows: I Superior, II Excellent, III Average, IV Below Average, V Poor. We are very proud of our ensembles as they consistently earn Excellent or Superior ratings each year.
